NOTES
Separate questions measured whether respondents had become more or less sensitive to clients, allowing a small number (39) of respondents to report that they had become more sensitive and that they had become less sensitive to clients. My assumption is that the terni âclientsâ does not evoke a single image in the minds of DHS employees, but a spectrum of faces and cases, some of which elicit compassion and some cynicism.
Many clients of Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors have never experienced the marginal status of traditional welfare clients. Some, for example, use the services of these counselors and the state as they attempt to regain independent living status after traumatic accidents.
Although some studies have found little relationship between sex and job satisfaction, Bryant and Perkins (1982) and Martin and Hanson (1985) as well as others have found significant variation. My own study of workers in a Tennessee implant prosthesis manufacturing corporation found that women responded more positively than men in a variety of job-related attitudes including job satisfaction (Williamson 1991).
SATIS items are recoded so that high answers reflect job satisfaction. The first item (Like job) is coded 1 to 4. The other three items were recoded so that DK is mid-range, resulting in a 1 to 5 response range.
Indeed, this is precisely why this DHS survey was conducted, to investigate the unusually high turnover rate among social counselors. It appears at this juncture that a lack of job satisfaction may not be the primary reason for turnover.
Just because a worker has an expressive orientation toward work does not mean that she or he thinks pay is unimportant. One worker reported that DHS takes advantage of employeesâ altruistic leanings by pretending that pay is not important
The instrument used in this study only measured levels of education, not areas of specialization. It is assumed that most individuals who have some college education, especially those who have more than a bachelors degree, received training in social work or a related field. This may not hold true, however, for Disability Claims Examiners and Eligibility Counselors which are less professionalized. Considering the similarity of scores for these two questions, I believe my comments are valid.
